An Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
