Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
